Subject: Union Dues Deductions
With the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement, Florida's universities are faced with the question of whether they can continue to allow payroll deductions for union dues. There is no statewide consensus on how to handle this. After consulting with numerous faculty and staff, we have decided that we will continue to allow payroll deductions for dues-paying members of the United Faculty of Florida; the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; the Police Benevolent Association, the Graduate Assistants United and Florida Nurses Association.
There are two ways we can do this: We can require members to notify us if they want the deductions to continue, or we can require members to notify us if they do not want the deductions to continue. We are electing to do this in the manner that causes the least amount of disruption to the union members. Therefore, we will notify employees who have elected payroll deduction for union dues that the deduction will continue unless they notify us that they wish to revoke their authorization.
